What is the NISD?

[Dividing Line Image]

The National Institute of Steel Detailing was formed in 1969 to create a better understanding and bond between individuals engaged in structural steel detailing; to eliminate injurious practices; to promote efficiency in the work; and to uphold the proper standards for the steel detailer in his relation to other members of the construction community.

The primary purpose of the Institute is to create a better understanding between the detailer, the fabricator, the architects, the engineers, and the general public. The Institute strongly believes that steel detailing is as exacting a science as engineering and architecture, and that the detailer is deserving of responsibility and recognition in the building trades. The ultimate completion of any structure requires the utmost cooperation among all members of the construction team and the exercising of highly specialized skills by the men who prepare shop drawings for the structural steel and miscellaneous iron work. The Institute maintains a formal liaison with the American Institute of Steel Construction.

The Institute has established a quality procedures program in recognition of the growing need to provide a more national system of improvements to the detailing profession. The primary function of the program is to establish detailing practices and procedures that assure translation of the intent of contract documents into shop drawings which meet the required quality procedures levels of the client. Through use of an audit by an independent agent the program certifies that recognized quality procedures are established by the detailing firm so that the end result will be quality detailing services to the construction industry.

E & E Detailing has been a regular member of the Institute scince 1993.

E & E Detailing has implemented a quality procedures program based upon the requirements of the NISD's QPP, and is expecting certification by the Institute in 2005.

E & E Detailing has two video tapes available for loans to other detailers, fabricators, erectors, architects and engineers. One video explains the science of steel detailing and the objectives of the Institute while the other explains the Quality Procedures Program.
